Happy New Year, Fourteen

The ol' rabbit, Thirteen, gazed cross the garden, taking one last look before his time was over.

"I sure am leaving the garden quite green", he said out loud, in case there was any one there who could hear him.

"I remember when I arrived and took over for Twelve, this place was snow covered from a blizzard that ol' Twelve threw down before he left for good.

"I kind of like this green,

Happy New Year, Eleven!

The old rabbit, Ten, stood at the garden gate, leaning on a hoe, at the very spot where he remembered Nine stood a year ago to welcome him. He peered off into the distance for the first sign of that young bunny, Eleven, and then looked back over the garden.

He was proud of what he’d done in the garden. There were new flower and shrub borders just waiting for spring planting and a new larger

Happy New Year, Fifteen

Time flies

The ol' rabbit Fourteen's bags were packed and he was checking his watch as he peered through the open garden gate looking for signs of Fifteen.

As he waited, he looked back over the garden and reflected on his year.  He was not particularly proud of the winter he had brought with him. It was surely one for the record books that wouldn't be forgotten for quite some time.  Cold,

Happy New Year, Twelve

The old rabbit, Eleven, sat in the green chairs left out in the garden for the winter and watched the gate on the far side of the garden for signs of his replacement, a young, energetic bunny named Twelve.

As he sat and waited, he began to reflect on the past year. He had some things to be proud of. He had made sure that the new beds and borders that Ten had left him were well-planted. He also

View across Ploppers Field on a snowy day

The ol' Rabbit, Twelve, stood in the snow looking across Ploppers Field toward the green chairs where he had seen Eleven waiting for him so long ago.

"My how a year can fly by," he said to no one in particular.  "I'm gobsmacked that it is time to go already, but I'm ready, none the less."

With that he looked at the notes he had carefully made out for

Blooms for the Twelves Days of Christmas

I suppose it really does work out better if the blooms of the Christmas season reach their peak after the 25th of December.

I will have more time to enjoy them while I relax after the hustle and bustle of pre-Christmas preparations.

Imagine me sitting in an easy chair by the window so I have view out into the garden where I can see the birds flitting around the feeders I set out and filled

Gardeners, What did you get for Chrismas?

I am surely the envy of all gardeners at Christmas-time with my brand new tree garden-y ornament.  It is a glass garden fork with a little toad sitting on the handle.

I've already hung it on the tree, as you can see, where it adds to my growing collection of gardening-theme ornaments.

And yes, I do have a hoe ornament.  Doesn't every gardener?

In other good news, I also received a pair of

The Secret Gifts in the Christmas Basket

There are some secret gifts for my nieces and nephews in my Christmas basket; some presents that embody all that a gift should be.

There’s a bit of Mystery to them because no one but me knows what gifts are in the basket.

There’s some Meaning in there, too, that the recipients will understand, maybe not today but someday.

There are the makings of fond Memories, too, in that basket.

The Christmas Cottontail's Next Adventure

The tiny elf ran, slipping and sliding on the snow and ice, all the way from Santa's workshop to the potting shed and greenhouse where the Christmas Cottontail was busy getting ready for his big night helping Santa.

It was late afternoon, and there were just two days left before Christmas.

Just as the Christmas Cottontail was ready to take a break for clover tea and green bean cookies, one

The Origin of Tree Fairies

Once upon a time, a garden fairy named Bud Greenleaf was out and about in the daylight, a time when garden fairies are normally hiding beneath shrubs and other low growing plants.

His mama, Bloom Greenleaf, had warned him many times not to go out during the day, but if he did, he should be careful not to be discovered by a cat or a dog, and absolutely to take cover and hide if he saw a gardener

I have more hoes than Santa Claus

We are putting a rush in our hurry up* here at May Dreams Gardens.

But even with hurrying up our rushing around, there is still time to grab the two hoes with red handles, wrap them in white streamers so they look like giant peppermint candy canes, and pose them by the fireplace.

I wish I had thought of this pose earlier so I could have used this photo for my Christmas cards. But I didn't

I am not buying a poinsettia this year

I am not buying a poinsettia this year.

I am not buying a poinsettia this year.  Been there, done that.  I'm more into the Christmas Rose as a potted plant for the holidays.

I am not buying a poinsettia this year.  As soon as I bring them home, they start to drop their leaves. I think they put those foil pot wrappers on the pots of poinsettias to hide the bare stems which show after all the

Dear Christmas Cottontail...

Dear Christmas Cottontail,

I hope that it is okay that I am writing directly to you instead of Santa Claus, but I thought since you and I are both gardeners you would understand my wants and needs and be able to convey them to Mr. Claus on my behalf.

Plus, much of what I want for Christmas can’t exactly be made by the elves in Santa’s workshop.

What I want is more your specialty, I think.

Lily of the Valley for Christmas

On the surface, the story appears to be that I happened to see some pre-cooled Lily of the Valley pips for sale and decided to order them and give them a try.

But actually the story of how I came to this point of planting Lily of the Valley pips a few weeks before Christmas so they will bloom for the holidays starts way back many decades ago when I was a little girl.

A Guest Post: Please Help The Tree Fairies!

 Garden fairies here.

We thought we’d post this weekend to help Carol out and bring to the world’s attention matters of grave importance and concern to our brethren the tree fairies.

The tree fairies live in the trees throughout the garden, such as they are at May Dreams Gardens. Every year at this time, they look forward to a little vacation inside in the Christmas tree, where it is warm

When A Gardener Sends Christmas Cards

When a gardener sends Christmas cards, she often chooses cards that reflect something from the garden, or remind her of gardens and plants, like this card featuring a window box arrangement with cardinals.

If she can't find a card with a picture of a window box arrangement, she might consider cards that feature wreaths made from all the goodness of a garden.

A Gardener’s Guide to Talking to Santa Claus

You know you need to do it, you want to do it. You are biding your time, waiting for a day when the kids are in school, waiting for a moment to present itself when he is all alone.

When that moment happens, don’t blow it. Be ready. Be prepared. You don’t want to rush, to appear greedy, as though this is all about you.

You want to speak clearly, make your needs and wants and deepest desires

When a gardener decides to collect a few vintage Christmas postcards...

She soon realizes she had better come up with some criteria for which postcards to collect before she has hundreds of postcards.

She decides she will collect those with unusual Christmas flowers, like this one with Lily of the Valley flowers.
